Description In a brief comparison with commonly known European languages, Japanese may appear to be a strange and unusual language. Due to its geographical proximity and the specifics of its written form, it is often associated with Chinese or Korean. Linguistic typology tries to classify languages on the basis of objective criteria. It may therefore come as a surprise that, in terms of basic word order, Japanese is one of the most typologically represented languages in the world. However, the verbal aspect may not be the only criterion. Japanese is not only a formal system of grammatical devices, but above all a living and inseparable part of the culture and society of its speakers. This lecture will focus on these cultural specificities of the Japanese language, place them in a typological context and try to approach how the Japanese conceptualize the world "through the eyes of the Japanese language".
