| Description | This book enters the established field of film history with a formal analysis of the first six Godzilla films produced by the Toho studio between 1954 and 1965. Through the tools of the poetics of fiction, it answers the question of how this kaiju franchise could still be appealing to audiences. The book's main argument, then, lies in the dialectical relationship between narrative and stylistic continuity and discontinuity. Certain aspects remained unchanged, while others were transformed or varied. Thus, the series' appeal came not only from the brawls of the great monsters, but also from the cultural assimilation of popular genres, foreign influences, themes, and narrative patterns. |
