Description | The paper delves into the evolution of approaches to the issue of female representation in Rome in late antiquity, especially to the relationship between women and the early Christian Church and the related visual manifestations. It aims to trace the development of methodological approaches and the emergence of new research questions in the Italian and international academic field from the 1980s till today, trying to find among them the points of convergence and divergence. The question of the relationship between women and the early Christian Church is of great interest to researchers not only in the field of art history, but also in the history of religions, cultural studies, social anthropology and history. Recognizing that the research questions posed by art historians are interconnected with broader disciplinary investigations, my analysis uses an interdisciplinary perspective. The paper seeks to verify the extent to which feminist and gender studies have influenced the path of the researchers' reflections and the applied methodologies. Furthermore, it advocates a data-driven approach as the promissing way forward for future research in this field. |
