Description | Completely unnoticed by the media, a significant archaeological discovery took place a few years ago. Not far from Prague, in the former medieval fortress of Budeč - incidentally the temporary home of Saint Wenceslas - a mass grave was uncovered. The bones of more than sixty burly men, showing signs of violence, suggest that a catastrophe occurred at this site. What is the story behind this tragic event? Is the massacre the work of Prince Boleslav, who was not afraid to walk over corpses in his quest for power? And what can visual and literary art tell us about medieval violence? This is the topic for archaeologist Jiří Macháček, art historian Ivan Foletti, and their guest Ivo Štefan, archaeologist and expert on the early medieval history of Bohemia and Great Moravia, who accepted the invitation to the 43rd episode of the podcast. |
