| Description | In his study, Marxists, Pseudo-Marxists and Neo-Marxists in Czech Archaeology, Jiří Macháček considers the various manifestations of Marxist influence on archaeological interpretation. In addition, he outlines five distinct phases: the pre-Marxist era up to 1948; the initial period of confused or naive pseudo-Marxism (as exemplified by J. Böhm and others): 1948–1968; the normalization period of conformist pseudo-Marxism (as exemplified by B. Chropovský and others): 1969–1989: the isolated appearance of authentic ("methodological") Marxists (E. Neustupný, V. Nekuda, P. Charvát); 1961–1989: the post-Marxist and Neo-Marxist period; since 1989. In general, based on his own experience and considerations, he states that Marxism in many ways conforms to the archaeological approach of examining the past. This is because materialism is embedded in the very foundations of archaeological thought, which views human society through artefacts. Consequently, he believes that it is mainly for these reasons that archaeology cannot remain resistant to Marxism. |
