Description Traditional literature on La Tene art explains it as an expression of elites. However Celtic Arts are multiple and that model does not explain all their forms. A critical analysis and a broader definition of the notion of art suggest more widespread aesthetic practices. The social diversity of La Tene arts responds to several factors. Different degrees in social hierarchies must be taken into account. Chronologically, decorated objects became more widespread during the La Tene period. A great number of ethnographic examples suggest alternatives for the prestige goods model. Decoration can also materialize and reinforce non-elite communities, affiliations and networks. Our idea of the social functions of La Tene art should evolve in order to include a broader community of creators, producers, users and viewers.
