Description | In 1997, the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich wrote the book Chernobyl Prayer, focusing on the nuclear disaster that altered the course of the world. However, her primary aim was to provide a voice to the individuals directly afflicted by the disaster. More than twenty years later, the HBO TV series Chernobyl endeavoured to depict this event in a new way, and Alexievich's work significantly influenced its creators. The objective of this paper is to investigate which aspects of the TV series drew inspiration from Alexievich’s book – whether it simply borrows certain plots, or if there are also similarities in the poetics of these otherwise dissimilar portrayals of the Chernobyl tragedy. |
