Description | In this paper I discuss, on the one hand, Greek perceptions of the effects of Greek culture on the Balkan peoples, and on the other hand, the dominant ideas about the Greek culture in the Balkan Peninsula, focusing at the same time on typical cultural crises for the Balkans. By attempting a research of texts by Greek authors written during the 19th and 20th centuries, I record the central Greek positions on the role of Greek culture in the Balkan reality. Furthermore, I analyze the tendency to compare Greek and Balkan cultures, a tendency that proves to be an extremely popular narrative choice. The material from which I draw my conclusions concerns a wide range of texts including literary works, testimonies, documents, historical and political treatises or even travel-geographical texts. On a second level, I aim to highlight the fact that, very often, these narratives turn out to be strategic, as they are distinguished by a view that could be described as "colonialist". |
