Description | The aim of the paper is to describe how Czech and Hong Kong parents look for private tutoring for their children and what criteria they use to decide on its form. The main source of data is semi-structured interviews with parents, which were carried out when private tutoring for children had already started or when parents were seriously considering providing it. The results show considerable similarities in parental attitudes. All parents in our sample perceived providing for their children's educational needs and private tutoring as part of the parental role and good parenting. Czech and Hong Kong parents try to respect their children's feelings and opinions when looking for tutoring and consider them when providing shadow education. They primarily rely on their own networks. |
