Description In 2020, as part of the construction of the Havlíčkův Brod bypass, the extinct farmstead of the Prchals was investigated. Probably already in the Middle Ages a rather unusual settlement structure consisting of scattered manors was established in the vicinity of Havlíčkův Brod. These inhabitants are then referred to as 'courtiers' in the modern period. The unusual settlement units in the hinterland of the town still shape the local landscape today. This paper will attempt to evaluate the excavated form of the Prchal farmstead itself and the archaeological findings here, as well as to present its inhabitants in the light of written sources. Moreover, we will try to compare the Havlíčskobrod courtiers with the free population documented in Bohemia and Moravia, which is also referred to as courtiers in the sources.
