Description | Sicilian has a directive construction formed by the second person singular of the imperative of iri ‘to go’ and the second person, singular or plural, of the imperative of a lexical verb (va pigghilu, let. ‘va prendilo’). The study explores the origin of the construction and its relationship with other constructions that also employ the deictic of movement but exhibit different semantic and formal characteristics. Based on studies that have investigated the development of directive markers in different languages from a historical-pragmatic perspective, the construction is interpreted as the result of a grammaticalisation process that originates in the dyadic interaction between the participants of the speech act, triggered by the specific deictic features of the verb. The analysis is carried out on a corpus of Old Sicilian texts (14th-18th cent.) |
