Description | More than a hundred years ago, Hašek's The Good Soldier Švejk was published for the first time. Since then, the novel has been translated into almost sixty languages, which is often mentioned in literature textbooks for Czech high school students to prove the classicism and renown of this work. At the same time, however, the knowledge, or rather popularity, of the work among the younger generation is not very great. In addition to the translations mentioned above, there have also been many transmediations across almost every conceivable medium. In addition to Josef Lada's illustrations, which form an inseparable part of the identity of Švejk for many recipients, almost 20 film adaptations have been created, not only Czech, but also English or Ukrainian, several comic adaptations, an opera by the American composer Robert Kurka... What do these transmediations have in common and how do they differ - either because of the media specificity of the target medium or because of the influence of external influences on the media product? Which of these transmediations occupy a central place in contemporary discourse? And through which media products is Švejk currently received by Czech and foreign audiences? In this paper I will try to answer these questions on the basis of an intermedial and multimodal analysis of the „Švejk's space“, which is based on my forthcoming dissertation. |
