Description The author of the present contribution investigates the relation between various functions of a literary artefact and its values based on them, e. g. epistemological/noetic/gnoseological, ideological, ethical, aesthetic, and poetological values. He came to the conclusion that the writer’s engagement need not mean the weakening of the aesthetic value, which is for art sciences, including literary criticism, substantial and that Weltanschauung can find itself in conflict with the method of creation as it was manifested by some 19th-century thinkers. The author demonstrates this on the authors of world literature (H. de Balzac, L. Tolstoy), on Czech and Slovak literatures and on the personality of Milan Kundera and on recent discussions about him and his work. He defends the view that from the standpoint of literary criticism the synthetic aesthetic value integrating further substantial values has a key importance.
