Description The novel “The Yoke of War” («??? ?????») was written as Andreyev's immediate reaction to the events of the First World War and their potential reflection in the life and psyche of people who remained on the home front. The form of a diary gives the writer the opportunity to combine selected facts of war with their reflection in life events and, above all, in the psyche of the main character. Step by step the negative facts of public and personal life destroys the self-consciousness and self-confidence of the fictitious author of the diary and gradually brings him to a turning point—the decision to commit suicide, which he finally does not commit. The suicide attempt, however, leads him to the complete destruction of his “I” and makes him an unsure of himself, a weak-willed creature, subject to external influence. In this way Andreev points out the disastrous consequences of war “at a distance”, i.e., to those who are not directly involved in the war, but it destroys not only their normal lives, but also themselves.
