Description The article analyses V. Y. Brusov's story "Pervaja ljubov´" (‘First Love’). Attention is paid to the incompatibility of the protagonist's ideas about ‘eternal attributes of love’ with the perception of his real experiences, as a result of which his inner conflict grows and culminates. The relationship between the protagonist and the older woman depicted in the story is treated both as a manifestation of the interest of early 20th century literature in the potential polyvalent disharmony in the relationship between man and woman and as a manifestation of an essentially tragic play - both characters, in our opinion, play "eternal" roles that do not correspond to the real situation in which they find themselves. The tension between the role attitudes of the characters is taken into account, with the abstract model of the lover's role being the main one, conveyed in the perspective of the first-person narrative (Ich-Form).
