Description New Realisms continue to be a topical subject of research in Central European art. Regional artists receive the same consideration as artists from the centre, and nationality is not a factor in their selection. Such an environment is ideal for the re-examination of the work of painter Břetislav Bartoš (1893–1926). Although Bartoš’s paintings have been continually exhibited and analysed, his work still tends to be viewed in terms of stereotypes and empty clichés, based on the accounts of several of his friends and fellow artists. The exhibition in Roudnice nad Labem and the accompanying publication aim to present a new interpretation of Bartoš’s oeuvre and place it in the broader context of the art scene in the first two decades of the twentieth century.
