Description | The exhibition presents black-and-white images - sections from the footage of a unique film material called Shots from Tibet 1959, created by an unknown Chinese cameraman. Luboš Bělka and sinologist Kamila Hladíková have been researching this film, shot in 16 mm format, and have confronted the previously unpublished film footage with Vinař's text and created a critical edition, which forms the basis of the exhibition. "Popular Western imagery usually visualizes Tibet as a mythical kingdom of the spirit, an eternally unchanging Shangri-La that tragically ended in the clutches of Red China. Vinar's historical reportage shows the country without mystical veil and embellishment, as it was seen in the 1950s by our 'progressive' intelligentsia committed to the ideals of communism. |
