Description | General nurses make up about half of the global health workforce. High turnover of general nurses has contributed to the global shortage. In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated a global shortage of 4.5 million general nurses by 2030. The most significant shortages are projected in the regions of Africa, South East Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, but workforce shortages are also a reality in Europe2. Staffing shortages need to be understood in the context of international differences in health system development, economic capacity, population size and availability of other health professionals (physicians but also non-physician health professionals). Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 30-50% of general nurses in the UK intended to leave their positions, mainly due to job dissatisfaction and feelings of lack of support. |
