Description In this article, the author notes the special status of the Hospitaller Commandery in Mailberg, the oldest religious house in Austria. In 1255, the eminent ministerialis Henry of Seefeld gave the local Hospitaller patronage in (Groß-)Harras to atone for the damage he had done to them. Further donations followed from the same nobleman, including the church in Ebenfurth in 1268. Just a day later, on 15 August, King Přemysl Otakar II issued a charter in Znojmo, by which he granted the Mailberg Master the patronage of the church in Marchegg (ius patronatus ecclesie apud Marchek), which was his by virtue of being the founder of the town. Among the witnesses, the first to be named is the Master of Mailberg, Wulfing. This religious dignitary played an important role at the court of King Přemysl Otakar II. In 1272, the Viennese burgher Paltram vor dem Freithof sold his castle in Unterlaa to Master Wulfing; a new commandery was established here, as in Ebenfurth.
