| Description | The article provides a concise and factually dense outline of the history of Czech-Serbian relations from the Middle Ages to the present day. In the Middle Ages contacts between the Czech Lands and Serbia were somewhat sporadic. The real growth in Czech-Serbian relations took place in the 19th century, during the national emancipation and liberation efforts of Czechs and Serbs to establish the independence first of their nations and then of their states. The idea of Slavic mutual cooperation was an important factor that helped to intensify Czech-Serbian relations. On the Czech side, the principal protagonists 50 of Czech-Serbian contacts of the time, especially in science and culture, were the Slavic scholars Josef Dobrovský and Pavel Josef Šafařík, the Slavophile František Alexandr Zach, the journalist and writer Josef Holeček, the ethnomusicologist and painter Ludvík Kuba, the historian Konstantin Jireček and others. Later political support and cooperation between Czechs and Serbs culminated at the beginning of the 20th century and during the First World War with the activities of university professor, philosopher and politician Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. From 1918 until the breakup of multinational Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Czech-Serbian contacts were part of wider CzechoslovakYugoslav relations. Bilateral Czech-Serbian relations were fully restored – in the cultural, economic and political fields – at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, in connection with the establishment of the independent Czech and Serbian states. The principal merit of the article being presented is not only the clear recording of the most important facts about Czech-Serbian contacts that have developed over several centuries, but also the rich bibliographic references in the notes, documenting a large number of monographs, studies and articles, especially on the Czech side, written in the past about the history of Czech – Serbian relations. |
