Description The author of the present study deals with the vertical (covering the formal and genre structure) and horizontal (containing literary currents and their representatives) reception of Russian literature on the basis of the past Czech experience which might be characterized as peculiarly nervous, restless, unquiet, uncertain from the very beginning, the time of the Czech national revival through Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism up the present day. The crucial problem of the Czech reception of Russian literature has related to its ideological, political nature, unfortunately always diverse moving from the positive towards the negative pole. The author expresses his conviction that the peculiarity and uncertainty of the Czech reception of Russian literature – more than the Slovak one, as the Slovak researchers have paid more attention to both the theoretical analysis and synthesis of the reception process – is linked with the anomalies of the trajectory of the Russian literary evolution giving several examples from the 20th-century Russian literature. At the end of the present contribution the author appeals for a certain cautiousness in relation to the turning points which occurred in the reception process in the past quite often, and in the contemporary situation the whole reception process should lead to the complex diachronous and synchronous vision both vertical and horizontal so as to grasp at least the majority of the positions of the Russian phenomenon in general to keep the differentiated, critical attitude. The results of such a reception will necessarily transcend their artistic and aesthetic space, bring a wider individual and social knowledge and provide – as literature always does – relevant epistemological material for sociology, social psychology and political science.
