Description PhD studies are often accompanied by significant challenges, including strained relationships with supervisors and limited autonomy in research. These difficulties are further compounded by social taboos that inhibit open discussions about career aspirations or interpersonal conflicts. While awareness of these issues is increasing, research on the influence of taboos across different institutional contexts remains sparse. This paper analyzes interviews conducted with phD students and supervisors (n = 40) to explore the emergence and perception of these taboos. The findings highlight notable differences in what supervisors and students perceive as taboo. For example, discussing personal ambitions is often considered taboo in interactions with supervisors, while such discussions are common among students. These differences are shaped by institutional culture and individual experiences. By shedding light on these dynamics, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how to provide more effective support for doctoral students, both academically and personally.
