Description | Timber floating has had an impact on the Nové Hrady region for centuries. The wood from the border forests was floated on local watercourses. The axis of timber navigation consisted of the Pohořský brook and the Černá and Malše rivers. However, there were no suitable stream profiles or enough water at higher altitudes to carry out this process. The Buquoyas, the owners of the Nové Hrady estate, solved the problem by improving the flow rate based on the project of Johann Franz Riemer, who used an ingenious system of splash dams and stream modifications to enable both, free as well as long logs be tied into rafts, which has made the Nové Hrady system unique in Europe. The Buquoyas made use of this technologically advanced system from the end of the 18th century until the Second World War years. The aim of this interdisciplinary study is to map the course of timber floating, primarily short logs, based, among other things, on previously untapped archival sources and to assess the existence of individual timber floating sites and their heritage potential. |
