Description The paper analyzes the transformation of municipal self-government in Prešov during the 18th century, focusing on the shift from municipal autonomy toward state-controlled administration. It examines how traditional municipal statutes, which were an expression of urban independence, were gradually sidelined and replaced by regulations and norms issued by state authorities. The author focuses primarily on the reign of Maria Theresa (1740-1780), when fundamental reforms of municipal administration took place. She analyzes mechanisms of state control, professionalization of administration, and transformations of municipal oaths and statutes. The paper documents how towns gradually changed from autonomous self-governing units into executors of state power while formally retaining their historical privileges.
