Description Protopine hydrochloride is the salt of isoquinoline alkaloid protopine. It is formed by the action of diluted hydrochloric acid on protopine free base. The N-methyl and hydroxyl groups are in the trans configuration in the quinolizine ring. The central quinolizine C-N bond is unusually long (1.579 A). The crystal is a racemate.
