Description This article is a commentary on Pierre Bourdieu's text titled Reproduction Strategies and Modes of Domination. The concept of strategy is outlined as a key idea of Bourdieu's theory of social action. The theoretical logic behind the concept of strategy is reconstructed in terms of Bourdieu's double break out from the objectivism of structuralism as well as from the subjectivism of existentialism. It is argued that Bourdieu's attempt to overcome the rule following model of action by means of stressing the importance the actor's strategies and habitus is a significant contribution to the discourse dealing with the interrelation of history and human freedom. Bourdieu's turn to practice and to the actor's point of view, via the illuminating metaphor of play, uncovers the importance of innovation, interest and the strive for prestige as a constitutive elements of social action.
