Citation
Description The Global report on the state of society is a complex information and a guide through developments in Slovakia in 2002. A chapter Roma describes events of 2002 in different fields of life of both Roma minority and majority in Slovakia. Between 2001 and 2002, the so called Roma issue, the problems and the fate of the Roma ethnic minority, became the focus of public and political debate, both in Slovakia and across Europe. International organizations, especially the European Parliament and the European Commission, repeatedly criticized shortcomings in Slovakia s handling of the problems of its Roma minority. Due to these criticisms, the Roma issue was assigned, along with corruption and loose fiscal policy, to a group of high-priority problems that have been highlighted by European Union (EU) institutions, and that complicate Slovakia s otherwise strong progress toward liberal democracy and a market economy.
