| Description | The study provides a brief description and analysis of the Catalan regional party arrangement and a historical overview of the major Catalan parties between 1977 and 2002. In terms of its format, the Catalan party system can be classified as that of a limited pluralism, and in terms of its working mechanics we can speak of a predominant party system. This arrangement is primarily characterized by the existence of a double continuum (i.e. right-left parties on the one hand, and centralist-autonomist on the other). In the opinion of the author, the existence of Catalan (Catalanist) parties and of a specific regional party system should be regarded as a natural political expression of a specific and distinctive character of Catalonia. |
