| Description | Czech-German code-switching has been thematized in both Czech and German language literatures. This article analyzes code-switching cues in several instances of code-switching both in the fictional world and writer-reader communication. Concludes that Czech writers, such as Karel Poláček and Rudolf Těsnohlídek, use code-switching motives (signifying alterity) more often, e. g. in characterization, while German writers, such as Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Ferdinand von Saar, Jakob Julius David, Franz Schamann, and Rainera Marii Rilka express association with a particular language community more in the terms of names, fragments of songs, and one-word long quotations. Author claims that positive connotations of the Czech language are to a large extend limited to the works from the pre-1897 period. |
