Description The contribution is one of the partial outcomes of a three-year project called Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and School Culture. The main aim of the project is to identify the role of ICT in school culture. In this project school culture is perceived as an important and relatively constant element of school life involving believes, values, opinions, standards, symbols, rituals and preferred ways of behaviour, which is manifested in the behaviour of people in schools as well as in their external relationships. The project attempts to map the influence of ICT on the culture of Czech basic school (ISCED 1 and 2), its main scopes and manifestations. Within the project we will try to answer the questions concerning the areas of school life in which ICT play an important role. The author of the contribution draws on a research project "The Culture of the Czech School and the Strategies of its Development". As a member of the project team he took participation in the identification of the key areas of school functioning and school culture in Czech conditions. The areas concerned are: "creation and attainment of a path the school is to walk on (school vision) ", "openness of school", "consent in main principles of school operation", " stimulating milieu to learning and teaching " and "school management". In this paper the author deals with the pre- research phase of the project whose main goal was to complete the existing knowledge of the topic and thus enable to start the empirical survey. The respondents of the survey were headmasters of 15 schools in one of the regions of the Czech Republic. The respondents were sent a questionnaire in which they were supposed to assess the above stated key areas of school functioning according to the potential for school development ascribed to ICT. They were also asked to answer some question concerning the more concrete role of ICT in the area of school development. After that some headmasters were interviewed during structured interviews. The results of the pre-research phase indicate the areas seen by the headmasters as showing significant potential for ICT, but also the areas perceived as being limited and the overall significance of ICT for the development of school and its culture.
