Description Gene eta encoding toxin ETA is located on the genome of a temperate phage which is integrated into the bacterial chromosome. Recent advances in understanding the molecular basis of S. aureus pathogenicity have revealed that a variety of its virulence factors are encoded by the variabile genetic elements such as transposons, plasmids, pathogenicity islands or prophages that were acquired through horizontal gene transfer during the evolution of pathogenic bacteria.
