Description | Vertical distribution of sediment dwelling invertebrates was studied in the Loučka River (Czech Republic) in 2002 - 2003 with use of the freeze-coring method. Cores were taken at three different sites in the riverbed from the surface layer to the depth of 70 cm. The densities of the main taxonomic groups of invertebrates were assessed for each 10 cm depth layer. In general, most invertebrates were concentrated in the upper 30 cm layer, but the vertical distribution differed among the invertebrate groups and also within the site and date. The influences of temperature, discharge, water level, and sediment size composition were taken into account to explain these differences and to describe the seasonal changes in vertical distribution. |
