Description | In stylistics, the source of knowledge is always a singular text, perceived and interpreted in a unique communicative situation. The text is the starting point of the process of generalization leading to the notion of stylistic norms of individual types of texts. Then there is the question, as to according to which criterion the generalization should be done. It is common to use function of the text as a criterion, but it is very well known that the term function can be used in various ways: both generally, in regard to various groups of texts, and with regard to each individual text taking into consideration the fact that its individual parts can bear various functions (moreover, the functions can be variously interpreted in various periods).Within this process it is necessary to put aside a part of the facts gained as a result of analyses and explanations. All this is possible in a pure scholarly approach to the reality of language and to the linguistic representation of reality. However, stylistics is also very closely linked with practical communication, which requires searching for generally acceptable rules for creating other texts and their evaluation as adequate/inadequate. |
