Description This paper considers the problems that biographers face due to a lack of directly biographical evidence, particularly the gaps that result from manuscript burning. This issue is elaborated in terms of the destruction of manuscripts relating to Gerard Manley Hopkins, as well as the context of Coventry Patmore's destruction of his own 'Sponsa Dei', a prose work that decadently merged the sacred with the profane.
