Description Buccal dental microwear has been studied in sample of 18 individuals from Dolní Věstonice, CZ. These individuals fall into early medieval sample (8th - half of 11th century), which is well recognized as Old-Slavonic population. Their molars and premolars were observed in secondary electrons of SEM. The length, orientation and number of all striations have been determined with SigmaScan Pro 5.0. Results obtained from this sample were subsequently compared with former studied populations of modern hunter-gatherers, pastoralists, and agriculturists with different diets (Lalueza et al. 1996), and one medieval sample from La Olmeda, Spain (Pérez-Pérez et al. 1994). Distinct microwear pattern according to the gender has been proved in Dolní Věstonice site. It should reflect variability between male and female diet depending probably on different ratio of meat intake and vegetal meals. This preliminary analysis confirmed inter-group variability in dietary inferences within medieval populations living in the Dolní Věstonice site. Mixed food with mainly vegetal part intake (cereals) was inferred in majority of 18 individuals from Dolní Věstonice site and different role of men and women in food gaining and processing could be also concluded.
