Description In the Brno theory of functional sentence perspective, summarized by Firbas (1992), a sentence is conceived as a field of distribution of communicative dynamism. Each sentence element acts as a communicative unit, carrying a certain degree of communicative dynamism. This degree is determined by contextual, semantic, syntactic, and prosodic factors, and reflects the relative extent to which the unit contributes to the development of communication. Focusing on the semantic factor, this paper provides a brief survey of Firbas's conception of dynamic semantic functions and elaborates his classification of dynamic semantic scales.
