Description The article, summarizing findings of a wide comparative analysis, presents the main characteristics - both form- and contents- - of the two postclassical scholarly compendia: the Noctes Atticae, a miscellaneous, partially autobiographical writing from Aulus Gellius (half 2nd century A. D.), and the Saturnalia, an educational fictitious dialogue from Macrobius (published soon after 530 A. D.). It shows the different genre-choice as well as the various science-presentations as a consequence of the different composition-period and the opposite intellectual concept of education (in the case of N. A. stressing the game and imagination, by Macrobius the system reflecting the ideal world of truth).
