Description The aim of this article is to present several theories of racism that try to explain its causes. Racism is a complex and complicated phenomenon which is not easy to be grasped. Its explanations differ according to the focus of the respective theories. We chose to present here some psychological, normative and power conflict theories. The psychological theories concentrate mainly on research of prejudice and its protagonists, normative theories study racism through collective representations with an emphasis on socialization and power conflict theories interpret this phenomenon as an effort of the dominant group to maintain its advantages.
