Description PDA units are often used for mapping in the field because of their compact size and low weight. However, small dimensions of PDA unit screen does not permit utilization of tools (e.g. symbols) as complex as in the case of regular PC laptops. Use of existing software for digital data gathering in the field with a PDA unit often causes problems resulting from low distinguishability of both underlying reference data and newly recorded data, which brings an increase of time consumption and overall discomfort. The above mentioned factors lead to lower accuracy and increased error rate in the resulting data set. Therefore, a new system of symbols and an interface specially designed for digital data gathering in the field with the use of PDA units will be designed and experimentally implemented within the frame of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic project of Information Society no. 1ET101630421, Mobile Gathering of Spatial Data for Real-Time Mapping (MOBILDAT). The system will take into consideration all special characteristics resulting from the limited size of PDA unit screens and from usual conditions of mapping in the field. It will make use of sketches for recording and editing geodata. Pilot studies are created for the areas of forestry mapping and delimitiation of spatial systems of ecological stability (ÚSES).
