| Description | The Summa recreatorum is an anonymous compilation written for the court of Charles IV., and was aimed for the entertainment of medieval intellectuals at feasts. The paper deals in detail with questions on fish and eggs. Most of these questions were taken over from Albert the Great's commentary on Aristotle's treatise De animalibus, suppressing, however, its original source. The questions were undoubtedly copied from yet another, by now lost, copy that was exploited not only by the author of the Summa recreatorum, but also by an author of another medieval treatise dealing with the same topic – the so called Mensa philosophica. The paper examines the way the author of the Summa treated his original source, and the extent to which the text was adapted and arranged with regard to the target audience. |
