Description This article presents design and selected results of the CPV video study of physics, that was realised at the Educational Research Centre, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University Brno (CZ) in 2004 and 2005. We analysed video recordings of 62 lessons of physics (on the topics of “composition of forces” and “electric circuit”) video-tapes in 7th and 8th grades of selected basic schools in Brno, Czech Republic. The video study results fall into the categories lesson organisation and phases of teaching. The findings show that physics teaching is controlled by the teacher and little space is available for individual and group activities. The teacher mainly communicates with the students by means of monologue, dictation or dialogue. Where phases of teaching are concerned, practising and application are typically employed, while motivation or metacognition based phases appear rather rarely. The results are discussed in the context of the TIMSS Video Study 1999 and the IPN Video Study Physics.
