| Description | The name of one of the most important goddess of the Greek pantheon, Athene, is apparently of non-Indo-European origin. In the article two alternative etymologies are discussed, the adaptation of the Semitic theonym Anat, and the development from the geographical term "table hill" of Hurrian origin, used first for acropolis, further for the city and finally for the goddess of the city. |
