Description |
The book is a manual for students and young scholars in the fields of educational sciences, psychology and related subjects. Ideally, the reader practices suggested steps on his/her own research project while reading the corresponding parts of the book. The title is divided into two parts. In the first, methodological part, we describe the complete process of a qualitative research from the initial idea, through choosing the research design, the data collection, the data analysis and interpretation, to the writing of the research report. First, we discuss the principal questions of methodology so that the reader gets sufficient support for the realization of his/her own research. The second chapter concerns the criteria of the quality of qualitative research (credibility, applicability, reliability) and the questions of ethics in qualitative research. The following chapters deal with the actual research process: the authors guide the reader so that he/she is able to design a practicable project, collect data, analyze them and write the final report. The reader learns when to employ case study, grounded theory or biography as the basic research design. The most attention is given to data analysis. The second part of the book includes model examples of previously realized qualitative researches, which correspond to the four designs described in the methodological part. The researches were carried out recently in the Czech or Slovak Republic. The objective of this part is to illustrate the kind of results achievable in qualitative research. The work should thus serve as a source of inspiration for beginning researchers and should demonstrate the aims of the individual steps described in the methodological part. Therefore, the book not only reflects the current theoretical discussion on qualitative approach but it also presents concrete research sets to show the practice of research in educational sciences. The book results from a co-operative work of a team of authors, who present a certain view of qualitative approach in pedagogy. Nevertheless, we do not see this approach as the only correct one. On the contrary, we regard variety of approaches to the examined piece of reality as a good source of information. Even though, we do not want to encourage copying the chaotic in the world. We support such a conception of qualitative approach, which takes into consideration the basic rules of research work, is based on a thorough preparation of the research project, careful choice of participants and demanding data analysis and interpretation. As suggested in the title, qualitative research is a game, which can be enjoyable to all the participants on the condition opposing processes taking place in education. |
