Description The article focuses on the formal characteristics of the comprehensive educational dialogue Saturnalia. The work in question is characterized as a specific variety of the genre, a diegematic symposial dialogue formed by a succession of extensive monologues. Further, individual formal models of the dialogue are analyzed, both those that are named by the author himself, i.e. the expected ones that ensure the reputability of the work, as well as those from which Macrobius actually adopted various symposial features. Finally, concrete examples show that Macrobius' approach to his models is critical; their original formal frame is modified so as to fulfil his own authorial aims.
