Description Ekmelic music is a special type of communication about tonal systems. This music was developed primarily in the 1970s and 1980s. The initial wave of enthusiasm and interest in this type of music gradually receded in the 1990s. This type of musical thinking was developed at the Department for Fundamental Study of Music (Abteilung für musikalische Grundlagenforschung; originally Richter Herf Institut für musikalische Grundlagenforschung), which was established in 1972 at the Salzburg Mozarteum (Universität Mozarteum Salzburg) by composers Franz Richter Herf a Rolf Maedel. Ekmelic thought permeates many musical fields and subfields; we can therefore speak of ekmelic notation, new musical instruments, new interpretations, or a specific method of ekmelic musical education with ekmelic music. Today the activities of the institute focus on research of psycho-acoustic phenomena (auditory phenomena), and on a detailed analysis of aural aspects and some intervalic or chordal combinations. Most recently there have been efforts to use these methods in the field of medicine in connection with Oriental methods of healing. Many questions arise around the listening and understanding of music. Everything involved in ekmelic music also relates closely to compositional method. "Ekmelic music" is not only a type of music, but also a style of thought and reflection about music.
