Description The author of the contribution suggests that the EU has to pay a particular attention to Serbia, which plays and is going to play an important role in the region. The integration of Serbia to the stabilization and association process is going to significantly influence the outcome of this project and a general stabilization of the West Balkan region. The author also suggests that in the Serbian political and social life regressive phenomena occur. One third of votes received by a block of extremist parties is reflected in its influence on a political climate. This stifling atmosphere is further intensified by Vojislav Koštunicas political group, which is open to clerical efforts of the ultraconservative wing of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which despite being considered a part of the democratic block, is often closer to the Serbian radicals than to the liberal democratic option for its methods of political struggle, rigorous vocabulary and irreconcible attitudes. The next part of the article deals with the Kosovo Question and cooperation with the ICTY.The concluding part of the study highlights the fact that a great influence of forces belonging to the past is caused by the small support of the international community, which is only declarative, often discreditably uses a whip and sugar policy or needlessly reopens old wounds (double standards for dealing with Kosovo-Albanian war crimes suspects etc.). A high percentage of young electors of the regressive political organizations can be explained by the fact, that more than 70% of a young generation has never had a chance to travel abroad because of a rigorous visa policy.
