Description Plant physiologists from the Masaryk University, Brno focus on photosynthesis and physiological processes in Antarctic mosses and lichens forming the vegetation cover of the Norhtern, deglaciated part of the James Ross Island, Antarctica. Using advanced biophysical methods, such as e.g. spectral reflectance, induced chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange measurements, they evaluate photosynthetic parameters under variety of climatic conditions. The emphasis is placed on plant responses to stress conditions. Protective mechanisms against extremes in their physical environment, such as e.g. freezing temperature, changes in availability of liquid water, low and high light doses, are studied as well. Under laboratory conditions, biochemical backgroud of the mechanisms is studied. Last but not least, lichen response to long-term atmospheric warming is studied by open top chambers that increase air temperature by 2 degree C in mean.
