Description The paper focuses on the problematics of translation of antroponyms used in Devatero pohádek by Czech author Karel Čapek. The main and general characteristics of two main groups of antroponyms in the book is that of the identification of the characters. The first group which includes existing surnames (in the book used maily for secondary characters) has no other quality that of identification. They also connect the story with the real word, a rare occurence in a fairy-tales. On the other hand the second group is composed of semantically more „promising“ speaking names. They usually characterize the protagonists in terms of their particular physical or psychological traits and they bear a rich semantic potential and are usually the source of a linguistic comicality. In the current paper we’ll focus mainly on the second group and try to analize what kind of solutions, sistematic or not, the Italian and English translators decided to adopt in their respective traductions.
