Description Freeze-etching was used to study structural changes in the nuclear envelope (NE) and nuclear pores (NP) during the cell cycle of HL-60 cells. During interphase changes in the NE structure and NP distribution were observed. The mean NP number per mm2 was 8.4 +/-1.1. NP distribution changed during the cell cycle, resulting in free-pore areas as well as formation of pore clusters. At apoptosis cluster formation was most conspicuous, with multiple rows or circular groups of pores. This method also enabled us to observe changes in the NE surface associated with advanced stages of apoptosis. These finding on the NE and NP morphology of HL-60 cells will provide grounds for comparisons in further studies on the effect of therapeutic ultrasound on NP morphology and distribution.
