Description | This short contribution is a contribution to the debate about whether it is possible that a certain types of goods are provided through non-government agencies. Article is devoted to a relatively long period of government in East India, where the joint-stock East India Company to act as sovereign in the controlled area, ensuring the production of public goods and perform the function of the State in norms according of the time. If the real operations of the Company will be interpreted in the context of the debate on the role of monopoly, as is described, for example, by Adam Smith (but also Joseph A. Schumpeter), then we can understand why and how to work a private corporation in the role of the State. The East India Company had created the foundations of British Empire in India, without long resigned to the main purpose of its existence, to the creation of a profit. Knowledge of the history of the Company contributes to the enrichment of economic thinking and inspired to discuss the dependence of economy and policy. Development of the Company is interesting for us for several reasons. In particular, it is clearly shows that the private corporation, if has the monopoly position in an area, is able to provide public goods whether or not has the share of tax revenue. It is also interesting and useful to compare the special position of the East India Company with generally used definition of the public sector. |
